Asus has the WL-500g Deluxe announced for many months now...

It's a WLAN b/g router with firewall - having 2 USB2.0 ports for print sharing, FTP server, USB2 webcam features ... so basically you could use this as a standalone fileserver at home if you attach a USB2 driver box to it...

And guess what... I want it - but it's simply not available - the previous model WL500g with only 1 USB1.1 port is the only thing deliverable currently... ok... will test out ASUS quality there and decide if I upgrade later...

What is really interesting about this device is the open source OS modding community that use to hack the firmware to add some neat features to the device...

That is supported by ASUS as they publish their complete sourcecode as it's written in the GPL... that's what I call viral marketing :-) - get it here

An interesting forum is here at Chupa.NL WL500g forums? - they even have a WIKI up to share findings about new/hidden settings

Expect some more news as I start to operate this device...

new! update 12/27:

  • I found a nice article on the router here
  • new firmware 1.9.2.7 has some new features:

1. Add: Wireless Speaker.
2. Add: WMM/WPA2 Support.
3. Add: Bandwidth Management
4. Add: MAC Filter for LAN and WLAN
5. Add: Local port for Virtual Server
4. Fix: monitor for WAN Die and Web Cam die

BUT Note: Using this firmware on WL500g, the range of wireless transmission will be shortened because of the power of tx is lower.
