Many specifics should be considered, prior to the purchase of a new home theater system.

To ensure the purchase and experience will be a pleasant and beneficial undertaking, rather than cumbersome and stressful.

Purchase the proper size of the system:

It is best to understand the size of the space available before your purchase. A system which is too large for your room will become a future problem. Additionally, a system which is too small for the room may result in lower sound or picture quality. If cabinets are involved, take the appropriate measurements. If your space is relatively small, consider buying the ‘home theater system in a box”. These systems contain the complete setup equipment for a generally lower cost. Additionally, the benefit of a home theater system in a box is that it offers an easier setup procedure. One can read about these systems online or in local sales papers or newspapers.

Select the appropriate components for the system:

Understand the specific equipment you will require for your system. Take stock of the equipment you have, i.e. the TV/monitor, stereo/Cd player, DVD/ Satellite receiver, etc. Check the input and output jacks. Be sure your equipment has the necessary input and output connections which will be needed for connecting all components.

Remote control: The remote control for your system should be comfortable, easy to use and should present easy access to principal buttons in low lighting.

This should be a universal remote control which can operate all of the components to the home theater.

Amplifiers: The amplifier is what will reinforce the audio signals. The amplifier for the system may be built directly into the speakers or perhaps it will be a separate component, or even built into the control center.

Speakers: The speaker qualities determine its performance. Speakers are the most important factor in your home stereo system. A home theater system generally consists of five to seven speakers. For a Dolby surround or Dolby digital surround sound configuration, there will typically be five speakers, left, right, center and mono speakers(often referred to as satellite speakers) ,and a much larger sub-woofer. And for Dolby digital EX two additional surround speakers are incorporated into the configuration. It’s always best to listen to the speakers before you purchase, but in the case of buying online, when you can’t listen to those prior to purchase, stick with companies and brand names you recognize, and those offering a first-rate guarantee.

Control Center: Connects and controls all audio/video input sources. It is the hub of the home theater system. Many control centers (receivers”) will allow for audio and video connections from a DVD or CD player. This permits for complete switching from the control center.

Understand the specifications your system will require; such as audio and video inputs, surround decoding, speaker configuration and frequency response.

Typically, home theater systems are priced from low-end (home theaters in a box) to higher-end (custom systems), and the more involved system will offer many additional functions and features.
