Herrie released a new NEC hacked firmware, the NEC 108v2 Special (Booktype) Holiday Edition.

FEATURES:

- DYNAMIC BITSETTING:
Now your NEC can burn DVD R(W)s with different book types
DVD R, -R, RW, -RW and -ROM are possible.

- NEW AUTO RESET ROUTINE:

Region code - no problem. If you ever have set a
regio code to your drive this firmware will reset your
drive to factory settings once. Don't worry about the
flash memory. After this reset the firmware will
not(!) write in flash anymore.

Any temporary regio code setting will disappear after
changing the DVD.

- 2X RIP LIMIT:
removed for sure

RESTRICTIONS:

- This firmware runs only on a original NEC 1300A v1.06 to 1.08 !!
The firmware does serveral checks and if it will find
incompatible hardware the drive would return the ident string
_NEC_ERROR! ND-1300A as an error message
to windows (only) applications instead of the correct string:
_NEC_DVD_RW ND-1300A
In this case go back to a (original) compatible firmware.

- NERO:
After erasing a preformated DVD RW with NERO the book type
seems not to be changed. But after burning a DVD the selected
book type will be correct.
Solution: use DVDInfo Pro to format your DVD RW discs.

- NO BITSETTING WITH NERO
Because of the insufficient book type features of NERO this
firmware detects NERO and does not offer book type capabilities
to NERO. That means NERO will never burn that book type you
have selected with DVDInfo for example. NERO does not affect
book type settings.

- NO BITSETTING OF CURRENT MEDIA
This firmware cannot change book type settings of the current
media afterwards (like a HP300 do), i.e. you must select the
desired book type before burning a DVD!! That is no restriction.

KNOWN FIRMWARE BUGS

- All versions of the original NEC1300 firmware do not indicate
the correct book type of DVD R medias....

Read on in the RPC-forum for all the restrictions and pitfalls - I didn't test this hack so far, because I am rather happy with my current firmware
