WinLIRC allows you to transmit and receive standard infrared remote control signals. This allows you to control your computer using almost any standard infrared remote control. It also allows your computer to control other equipment which uses these signals (stereo equipment).

WinLIRC is the windows port of LIRC

Unfortunately I haven't yet found out how to utilize my USB IRDA receiver with WinLIRC. They have nice blueprints for self-made serial port IR-receivers but no support for the IRDA device.

On another location I read that the IRDA receivers don't support the consumer IR... hmmm - maybe I'll have to create some receiver by myself?

I tried using this WinLIRC and all the IR based software. It was't very consistent. I did however find another solution with my T68 bluetooth phone.

I bought myself a bluetooth USB dongle and from there on given software from here http://www.clubsonyericsson.com/en/software_windows.shtml I was able to remote control the pc with the bluetooth phone.
