Sony Ericsson unveils the P910 communicator and its integrated thumbboard, broad e-mail support, quadruple the memory and improved screen.

follow up for the P900 (successor of the P800 with equal capabilites, new design)
the P910, closely resembles the P900, but offers a slightly updated design incorporating among other things a thumbboard and improved screen.

several minor upgrades:

five-way jog dial
internal memory of the communicator has been expanded from 16 MB to 64 MB
Sony Ericsson will also include a 32 MB Memory Stick Duo card in the sales package as opposed to the 16 MB found in P900 sales packages
Memory Stick Duo Pro cards up to 1 GB
support for IrDA, Bluetooth and USB connectivity
view 18-bit or 262,144 colours simultaneously
integrated digital camera unchanged - still capable of shooting both still pictures and video, and also retains the original 0.3 Megapixel resolution found in the P900.
support for a wide range of e-mail providers such as Smartner, IBM, Extended Systems, Visto, RIM BlackBerry, Seven and IntelliSync
several applications out of the box - some trial, and some full versions
newly developed version of the AvantGo offline web browser which has proved extremely popular on other mobile device platforms
Media Viewer, which provides direct access to news from sources such as Financial Times and Promyzer, which offers real-time market quotes and stock trading
HP Runestone will allow messages, pictures, calendars and contacts to be printed directly to a Bluetooth-enabled HP printer
navigation tool Wayfinder is included on the accompanying CD, able to work in conjunction with a Bluetooth GPS receiver to function as a turn by turn in-car navigation system.
3 different versions of the P910 will be available for different markets.
P910a: offering tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz, will be available in North and Latin America.
P910c offers tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz and will be available on the China mainland
P910i: for all remaining markets and also offers GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz.

The P910 will start shipping globally in the third quarter and exists with five different keyboard variants to meet the needs of different language groups: Qwerty, Qwertz, Azerty, Russian and Greek.

The prizes for the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004 are:

$7,000 USD cash prize to each of three winners (Americas, EMEA and APAC champions)
Winners will receive highly valuable placement on the Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads site for commercial distribution (revenue-sharing).

Nokia considers Psion a takeover - in a bid to dominate the multibillion-dollar cellphone software market and fend off Microsoft. They are already partners in Symbian, which makes software used in mobile phones. Nokia currently owns 32 percent of Symbian and Psion has 31 percent.

A takeover of Psion would give Nokia control over Symbian and help it head off growing competition in cellphone software from Microsoft, the world's largest software company.

Now what would this have to mean for Sony Ericsson's P800 , P900 series runnig symbian aswell.. this dominance might be a problem for some SE-execs, don't you think so?

P800 users petition for P900 functionality - frustrated owners of the Sony Ericsson P800 have established a petition seeking Sony Ericsson to provide a software upgrade for the P800 to bring certain aspects of its functionality on par with its successor. This includes the UIQ 2.1 upgrade, which shall bring major improvements to P800 owners - something you would expect from a high-range phone (introduction price for EUR 999!)

My-Symbian.com reports that Sony Ericsson has released new APIs for development for the P800 UIQ platform. Check Mobility World pages for the latest versions of Camera and Vibration APIs as well as brand new Streaming AMR API that allows playback and recording of AMR encoded sound. The API supports a wide range of different bit-rates and is bundled with a reference application.

Added initial support for using multiple blog servers. For now, you can't post to two different blogs with the same name.
Can now set the time zone so that post time-stamps are accurate.
The maximum post body size is also adjustable, this sets the maximum size for the main and extended bodies and the excerpt. If you are getting crashes when editing these parts of the post, adjust the maximum size down a bit.
The default maximum post body size has been adjusted down to a more reasonable 4096 characters (from 10240).
Memory usage should be down a little in general, hopefully Azure will work better in tighter spaces.

There is a free "standard" version that should be sufficient more many users, while the pro version has some convenience features like "full-screen-reading"...

NO Stable RSS J2ME Newsfeed Reader for P800 (yet)!

as I wrote in previous posts the landscape for RSS on P800 does look like there's something available...

well - test results are frustrating

Friday does only support Syndic8 and does not even seem to connect... found no source...
mReaderdoes import OPML and connects *sometimes* for download (without progress logs) and then nothing - no reading worked
PeekAndPick at least brought me to the posts to mark for emailing, but then the email-function was broke... oh well...
special test for blog-posting not RSS reading Azure returns unspecific errors (general exceptions because of general exception catchers :-( what I saw from the code I started to play around) but I at least could make a connect *sometimes*

all of these apps are Java / J2ME 1.04 and free/open source (although not all open)... I did not try the commercial tip because of it's obvious limitations... I also stepped back from the original requirement of offline-browsing and tried to have RSS reading "at least" online

well - overall the usability is without doubt critical and not-usable for my day-to-day use... Eclipse is warmed up and fit with WTK104 and I wonder if there will be chance to make 1 good from 3 bad versions...

NO Offline RSS Newsfeed Reader on P800 / J2ME !

Well, I have been researching the web now for more than 2 hours to find a tool for performing a common task on my Sony Ericsson P800 RSS newsfeed reading on my P800 ... and this of course *OFFLINE* while sitting in the pool - without additional GPRS transfer cost if I just took my P800 away from the docking station :-(

Can you believe it? No application found - no Opensource, no Commercial, no nothing - Am I the only person equipped with a Smartphone with some megs (80 to be precise) longing for an offline version of Sharpreader or some other Aggregator?

I used the great RSS Feed Reader Directory by Hebig and this great RSS resources page addition to good old Google (yes - including the New Fuzzy Search Operator :-)
