The new Internet Tablet, unveiled Wednesday and slated to go on sale this summer, is based on the open-source Linux operating system rather than the Symbian platform Nokia uses for "smart" cell phones.

Asus WL-500g Deluxe WLAN b/g router with firewall - USB2.0 print sharing, FTP server, USB2 webcam features

ASUS WL500g hacker's community

Asus has the WL-500g Deluxe announced for many months now...

It's a WLAN b/g router with firewall - having 2 USB2.0 ports for print sharing, FTP server, USB2 webcam features ... so basically you could use this as a standalone fileserver at home if you attach a USB2 driver box to it...

And guess what... I want it - but it's simply not available - the previous model WL500g with only 1 USB1.1 port is the only thing deliverable currently... ok... will test out ASUS quality there and decide if I upgrade later...

What is really interesting about this device is the open source OS modding community that use to hack the firmware to add some neat features to the device...

That is supported by ASUS as they publish their complete sourcecode as it's written in the GPL... that's what I call viral marketing :-) - get it here

An interesting forum is here at Chupa.NL WL500g forums? - they even have a WIKI up to share findings about new/hidden settings

Expect some more news as I start to operate this device...

No - that's where the WGT634U comes in.

Based on the WGT624 108Mbps router , the WGT634U has an extra feature - a USB 2.0 port. This connects to any USB storage device or memory stick to turn the WGT634U into a wireless network attached storage (NAS) server, ideal for storing all your media files in one place, and giving it the name of 'Wireless Media Router'.

A previous press-release already informed about their plans where it says:

Dell Truemobile 1300 support in Linux - finally

Linuxant WLAN Driver support for Linux

Linuxant - DriverLoader for Wireless LAN devices strives to bring the very latest Wireless LAN technology to the Linux community. It's a compatibility-wrapper allowing standard Windows NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) drivers shipped by hardware vendors to be used as-is on Linux x86 systems.

That is the solution to support devices for which no adequate native open-source drivers are available. Very famous chipsets such as the hyped Centrino hardware or even WLAN 802.11g chipsets in cards like my Truemobile 1300 are not yet supported by the hardware vendors - 6 months or more after chipset release.

<inlinead>
Linuxant probably didn't manage to get hardware vendor license their stuff, so you need to buy their DriverLoader for $19.95 as noted here

They have quite a strange way of loading the windows NDIS drivers via a local webserver, mounted at port 18xxx that is open where you have to provide your root password - not just a very bullet-proof way I guess.
