Skype announced the 2.0 yesterday - including a new video chat feature!

Well - nice to see this feature evolve... but I'm still not sure if I want my clients see me sitting around in a Pyjama when I'm talking to them in a phone conf between 1 and 2 am :)

There's new Skype phone hardware in town...

USRobotics USB Internet Phone and the LinkSys CIT200 are reviewed both in the great VOIP blog by Tom Keating...

I am sure there's more Skype hardware around the corner as we approach x-mas in lightspeed...

The Linksys CIT-200 is available around $129

Finally Skype Groups allow company-like registration, with an administrator for "people-that-like-numbers" (accountants).

We’ve developed this nice tool for the person in your group in charge of the money. Now you don’t have to fiddle around with credit cards and payments; instead the group administrator can allocate Skype Credit, SkypeIn numbers and Skype Voicemail to all members of the group. And it’s easy to print nice documents that will keep the people who care about the numbers happy, too.

Most important from a company-viewpoint - they finally allow the registration of an EU VAT number and to exempt the 15% VAT they didn't allow to exempt for the past 6+ months.... (not sure if this was legal anyway....)

the Free SkypeOut Days are a nice promo by skype to show users how cool it is to phone to normal wire phones from their internet Pc...

We wish every day could be a Free SkypeOut Day, but that would make us bankrupt. So our accountant says we can have 4 of them this month.

The simple idea to record a phone call for "quality assurance" purpose or just to use it to type an interview should work perfect with such a crisp clear phone soltion as Skype. I found a couple of people already went to great lengths to describe and discuss possible solutions:

  • Bill created a multi-page, full color PDF tutorial on using the VAC (virtual audio cables) software for $40 to create a setup with multiple running Skypes on one machine ... he speaks about creating hard restore points in WinXP to get rid of the demo version, so I don't really have much trust in this solution - as it also sound quite complicated to setup

But his introduction is a very clear and motivating one

Many friends and colleagues have experienced the clarity of Skype with me. This same group also wants to go Podcasting. From Poets to Panels creating Podcasts from a lonely Windows PC seemed impossible. Well... turns out it isn't. Now you can interview, record and become the next big broadcasting stars on the Internet. This solution enables

  • Total Recorder is a virtual sound card driver software that should enable you to record every sound on your PC and a friend of mine already used that software in older version for recording audio streams ... for the price of $11.95 for the standard version this should be a fine solution - and the highcriteria developers seem to work actively with Skype users on resolving issues
  • in the Skype User Forum a couple of other products SuperMP3Recorder, HotRecorder, Pamela Professional that could be alternatives in the future

I'll start with TotalRecorder now...
